For those who have occasional heartburn, taking a Tums or a Rolaids may be effective in relieving the burning pain of heartburn. Both work fairly simply, they are calcium carbonate products that help neutralize stomach acids. They are handy in that they work instantly, with no lag time. Both are a good source of calcium as well. For those with more severe or persistent heartburn symptoms, I would recommend you consider a step up to Zantac or Tagamet, both being more effective stomach acid suppressors (note they are not neutralizers, but actually suppress stomach acid production). Finally, for the really serious cases of persistent heartburn that do not get better with the previous treatments, I'd try Prilosec or Prevacid, which are the very best inhibitors of stomach acid production in an over-the-counter form. For my money and my tummy, TUMS can't be beat for indigestion and heartburn. The flavors are not too chalky, and actually are quite nice I think. And for me these tablets give very, very fast relief to heartburn. A lot of times if I work late I also eat dinner late and go to bed soon after. Sometimes I wake up with heartburn. A couple of TUMS soothes my stomach and lets me get back to sleep very quickly. TUMS are my preferred antacid.
