I had a similar experience to the reviewer who said GABA gave her insomnia. I just had one of the the worst nights of my life after taking 750 mg GABA at bedtime. Agitation and tension kept me awake for an hour before I finally gave up and took and OTC sleeping pill. Never again. I keep reading that GABA has no side effects, but it certainly does backfire for some of us.

I decided to try this product to see if it helps with my social anxiety. I've been using GABA 750mg off and on for about a month, only 1x daily, when I wakeup. After taking it, I feel my heartrate is lowered (the calming effect), and generally more relaxed, I feel much more alert and energized also. It feels like my body is calmed down, while my mind is made more alert/clear/concise. However, I did decide to try going 2x daily, 1 when I wakeup, 1 an hour before bedtime. BIG mistake. About 3 weeks ago, for the first time I took one about an hour before bedtime. I had a seriously hard time falling asleep, normally it takes me about 10-20 minutes, however it took me about 45 minutes. I figured it may have been something I ate, drank, and not particularly GABA. However, I didnt bother trying it again, until tonight. As I write this review, its 6am, and i've been awake for a total of 24 hours now. Its now 8 hours past my bedtime, and 9 hours since I decided to try another pre-bedtime GABA 750mg - NEVER AGAIN. I've never had so much difficulty falling asleep. First 45 minutes in bed trying to fall asleep, I felt totally calm, heart-rate about 70-80, clear mind, no thoughts. I just couldn't "kick-over" to sleep mode. After an hour, I was annoyed, watched tv for 20 minutes, tried to fall asleep again. 40 minutes later, nothing, still cant get into sleep mode. Tried reading a book for 20 minutes, now going on 2 hours past my normal sleep time (i'd normally be deep in sleep by now!). Thought I was getting tired, tried it again, 40 minutes, nothing. 3 hours, just sitting there, eyes closed, body calm (from GABA), heartrate 70-80, clear mind, just couldn't get into sleep mode! I felt 100% completely alert with a perfectly clear mind, totally bizarre. It was 1am that felt like it was 1pm. I do have a history of insomnia, so, after 3 hours, I began to worry that if I fell asleep at 1am (versus my normal 10pm), my body would develop 1am as my normal sleeping schedule. I decided to stay up the entire night, just to ensure the next night (tonight), I will be able to return to the 10pm routine. Nonetheless, I have no idea how others claim GABA helps them sleep, the only thing I can suspect is that they have a much lower level of GABA. For me? Completely opposite. After some researching on the internet, i've found that too much GABA in the brain can cause an opposite effect (instead of calming - causing anxiety). Perhaps I already have a balanced level of natural GABA within me, and taking this pre-bedtime raises it to an unbalanced, high level, causing a too clear, sharp, energized mind when its time to go to sleep. Again, my body felt calm, my mind was clear, but I was not at all in a tired-sleeping mode, even after 3 hours past my normal sleeping time. In fact, I didn't even yawn a single time while tossing and turning. Nonetheless, 3/5 stars, for me, GABA is fine after I wakeup, 1x daily, as it'll wear off by the time bedtime rolls around. Its 6am as I write this review, 8 hours since I would normally fall asleep, I feel like crap, look like crap, as anyone would on zero sleep, body still very calm (my body feels tired now), but my mind still feels totally alert and clear, nowhere near a sleep state, as if i'm ready to go have at it at quantum physics.

Ive been battling sleep disorder for years and taking GABA will no doubt knock you out within 1 hour. You begin to feel it 15-30 minutes.I take half now because 750mg causes me to feel groggy in the morning.
