For those who have occasional heartburn, taking a Rolaids or Tums may be effective in relieving the burning pain of heartburn. Both work fairly simply, they are calcium and magnesium products that help neutralize stomach acids. They are handy in that they work instantly, with no lag time. For those with more severe or persistent heartburn symptoms, I would recommend you consider a step up to Zantac or Tagamet, both being more effective stomach acid suppressors (note they are not neutralizers, but actually suppress stomach acid production). Finally, for the really serious cases of persistent heartburn that do not get better with the previous treatments, I'd try Prilosec or Prevacid, which are the very best inhibitors of stomach acid production in an over-the-counter form.
