Tips to stop nail biting
People might bite their nails out of habit, anxiety, boredom, etc. Nail biting is often an unconscious habit and it’s unhealthy. The nail biter can do damage to their nails, nail beds, teeth, gums, and more. The nail biter can contract diseases and get infections from biting their nails.
Here are a few tips to stop this unhealthy habit:
- Set a day to quit: Plan a day when you are going to stop. You are not allowed to bite your nails after the beginning of this day. Do whatever it takes to not bite your nails. If you find that you are chewing on your nails, simply tell yourself to stop and do something else with your hands to take your mind off of your nails.
- Photos as motivation: Keep a photo of hands with nice, healthy nails with you at all times. When you feel like biting, grab this picture and imagine your hands with these lovely nails.
- False nails: You can try getting false nails such as acrylics. These nails are thick and pretty. You might be less tempted to chew a manicure off. And this will let your natural nails grow out.
- Buy a bitter polish: You can find nail polish that has a bitter taste at some drug stores. Hopefully the polish will taste bad enough that you simply cannot chew your nails.
- Eat carrot sticks or chew gum: When you feel like you have to chew your nails, try eating carrot sticks or chewing gum instead.
- Cut excess nail with nail clippers and remove dead skin and hang nails: You might be less tempted to chew on short nails, dead skin around your nails, and hang nails if this is all completely removed. Find nail clippers at almost all drugstores to trim nails and remove hang nails.
- Stress ball: Use a stress ball instead of biting your nails. Focus on this stress ball or think about something else to get your mind away from nail biting.
- Keep a journal: Write down what you are doing, thinking, and feeling when you want to bite your nails. This may help you figure out what triggers any anxiety that leads to your nail biting. Then you can try to avoid this anxiety trigger in the future.
- Cognitive behavioral therapy: This is an option for nail biters who simply cannot stop chewing on their nails. This therapy should be able to pinpoint why you bite your nails as well as help you to learn new ways to deal with anxiety and nail biting. This option is more of a last resort for people have a serious nail biting problem.
