My top hair styling tools
By Jayashri on May 27
Not many of us are endowed with naturally bouncy, shiny hair. We have to work at it! So, there’s no reason why everybody can’t get it. With the help of a few styling tools, you and I can have lovely hair. Here’s a look at some tools and tips to help you get beautiful hair:
- Essential hair styling tools are hair blow dryers like Conair or Solano hair dryers that help you get a salon styled look with very little effort. They work by blowing a gush of air through a heated nichrome that creates a blast of hot air to dry wet hair and leave it looking shiny and fresh. Using a nozzle with a blow dryer gives your hair a smooth look while using the diffuser dries curly hair without causing frizz.
- A hot iron is indispensable if you want to smooth your hair. Move the flat iron down each section of your hair in smooth passes with light to medium pressure. Avoid starting and stopping the iron if you want to avoid indeterminate waves in your hair.
- Rollers can add volume and wave to your hair. Lift sections of hair and place the roller underneath the section and roll down towards the direction of your scalp for light waves with minimum volume.
- Mousse, hair thickening lotions and hair spray work to give volume and bounce to hair and keep it looking healthy. A volumizing mousse defines hair and gives curly hair body and movement. Hair thickening lotions plump up strands of hair and boost volume. Once styled, hair spray works to maintain the style and keep it in place.
You must have heard of the adage, “No pain, no gain.” Well, that applies to beautiful looking hair too. A little patience can go a long way. Only remember to use quality products that don’t damage your hair permanently.
Straightening techniques
-
Hair blow dryers with a paddle or round brush combine for a simple and effective technique for hair that isn’t extremely curly, but can be frustrating for those who are unskilled. Marie Claire’s Didi Gluck suggests wearing hair in an extreme part after blow-drying – the added weight on one side prevents hair from getting puffy.
- Using a flat iron is a persuasive straightening technique for coarse and curly hair; however, a flat iron’s high temperatures can damage your hair if you don’t take the proper precautions.
-
Styling products, such as hair sprays, gels, mousses, and putties, are used in conjunction with the blow and/or flat iron routine.
- Comb silicone creams into hair after showering to prevent hair from curling. Creams like Pantene Pro-V Nature Fusion Smoothing Crème, are relatively cheap and work on all hair types. However, they can have a greasy texture and will capture dirt easily. While silicone can feel heavy to the point of making it unsuitable for fine to medium hair, it does not, as some fear, act as a barrier between the hair shaft and moisture.
-
Keratin hair treatments such as the trendy Brazilian blow-out are straightening techniques suggested for curly, frizzy, coarse or over-processed tresses and will result in hair that dries straight and is easy to comb, as well frizz-resistant. Even damaged hair will come out shiny and straight, although concerns have been raised in regard to the amount formaldehyde used in the original formula. As a result, formaldehyde-free versions of the treatment have been developed. Read "Top hair straightening kits" for further info.
-
Relaxers physically alter the protein structure of the hair follicle through strong chemicals. Read "When should I use a straightening relaxer?" for a more comprehensive explanation.
-
Thermal reconditioning (Japanese hair straightening or perm) is another chemical straightening procedure that removes curls for up to six months. This procedure differs from relaxing because it incorporates heating methods for extra smoothening. The entire process can take from three to six hours and is not recommended on chemically processed hair.
