How to care for hang nails
WHAT: When the cuticle, or the skin around the nail, becomes dry and small tears or splits form in the nail plate. It is not a serious condition but can be unattractive, annoying, and may lead to infection. Read on for tips on how to care for a hangnail.
TREATING A HANGNAIL:
- Soak your hands with warm soapy water or in oil to soften the hangnail.
- Use small cuticle scissors or nail clippers and remove hangnail as close to the skin as you can get.
- Apply a small amount of antiseptic or antibiotic cream.
- Rub cuticle oil into your hands and cuticles.
PREVENTION: With nutritious eating habits, your nails and cuticles will be healthy. Foods with iron, calcium, potassium, and vitamin B (like dairy products, soy, celery, and seafood) can contribute in hangnail prevention. Keep hydrated by drinking enough water during the day and be sure to moisturize your hands. Incorporating healthy fats like unheated olive oil, extra virgin coconut oil, flaxseed oil, salmon oil in the summer and cod liver oil in the winter can also help with dryness.
Refrain from biting or picking at your nails; in addition, use a cuticle tool to push back the cuticle instead of cutting cuticles.
Regular manicures generally help prevent hangnails.
