"Vitamin B-1 (thiamine ) is essential for the metabolism of carbohydrates, some amino acids and alcohol. B-1 is necessary for the production of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, and for the detoxification of both alcohol and lactic acid (a by product of strenuous exercise). Prolonged severe b-1 deficiency can cause beriberi. A high carbohydrate diet, strenuous physical exercise, or chronic alcohol consumption may increase the risk of b-1 deficiency symptoms in those whose dietary intake of b-1 is marginal."
