Alleve is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to relieve mild to moderate pain (analgesic action). It has a variety of uses: arthritis, tendinitis, bursitis, gout, headache, menstrual pain, and migraines. It also reduces fever and inflammation. The analgesic effect is apparent in 1 hour after taking a dose. The anti-inflammatory effect is cummulative and is apparent after taking the medication on a daily basis for a week or more. The most common side effect of any NSAID drug is stomach upset. It will cause minor stomach bleeding with every dose you take, and can cause severe bleeding and pain in rare instances. One should not take Alleve day after day without being monitored by a MD. It can cause liver changes and can also harm the kidneys if used chronically. The major advantage to using Alleve is that its action is so long-lasting compared to other analgesics, such as Ibuprofen, Tylenol, and aspirin. One dose of Alleve can last as long as 6-8 hours. A tablet of Alleve is 220 mg. The usual dose is 250-375 mg in the morning and the evening. Since the usual dose is based on a 150 pound person, if you happen to weigh over 210 pounds, taking two Alleve will not hurt you and will be more effective than a single tablet. When this was a prescription medication, it was known as Naprosyn. It was mostly prescribed for arthritis pain. Hope this helps. Jim "Konedog" Koenig

Usually for headaches and fevers I will take tylonol. But for a constant reocurring pain in my wrist, Aleve is the best choice. The tendinitous in my wrist causes me great discomfort; especially when I am at the work place. Tylonol can get rid of the pain temporarily but I have found that Aleve really gives me some long lasting relief. They say "all day strong" for a reason! I can be generaly relieved for the rest of the day with just two of these small blue aleve pills. Aleve also does wonders for my lower back pain that I get from standing for long periods of time. Tylonol is great, but Aleve works better in many cases.
