Afrin works as advertized to relieve nasal congestion. The active ingredient is a compound called Oxymetazoline (ox-i-met-AZ-oh-leen). This medication is commonly used for the temporary relief of nasal congestion or stuffiness caused by hay fever or other allergies, colds, or sinus trouble. Afrin will give you free breathing nasal/sinus passageways for up to 12 hours. However, once it wears off, there is a rebound effect (rebound nasal congestion) that is perhaps worse than the original nasal congestion! Your sinuses will clamp shut and you will be right back where you started. The rebound effect will last at least a half a day or more. Please resist the urge to use more Afrin to clear the rebound effect! You will only be forestalling the inevitable. Because of the rebound effect, it is easy to get into the habit of using Afrin over and over, but ultimately when the dosages are stopped, the rebound effect begins. Still, there are times when you just have to have clear nasal/sinuses, and if you have one of those times, Afrin is a good product to use. Jim "Konedog" Koenig

It works really well when you're all congested.

This product worked just as it stated. It was comfortable to use and took care of my allergies. I didn't notice any significant advantages over similar products but I'd recommend it to friends and family.
